Josh Harris becomes a NFL team owner – Snyders agree to sell Commanders

NFL Shield in front of wilson footballs. In this text: Josh Harris becomes a NFL team owner - Snyders agree to sell Commanders

The Washington Commanders are set to have new ownership as a group led by Josh Harris has agreed to purchase the team for a record-breaking $6.05 billion, according to sources. This deal would surpass the previous U.S. sports franchise record of $4.65 billion, which was paid for the Denver Broncos in 2022.

The agreement still needs to be approved by the NFL, but both parties are eager to see the sale go through. The Commanders’ co-owners, Tanya and Dan Snyder, expressed their pleasure at the sale, stating they are looking forward to the transaction’s prompt completion and rooting for Josh and the team in the coming years.

Josh Harris – Commanders

Harris, who is the primary owner of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, will lead a group that includes billionaire Mitchell Rales and former NBA star Magic Johnson. Harris expressed his excitement about taking over the Commanders, promising to make significant investments on and off the field to achieve excellence and have a lasting and positive impact on the community.

This sale comes after the Snyder family announced in November 2022 that they would be exploring a sale of the NFC East club. Dan Snyder bought the Washington franchise in 1999, but his tenure has been marred by alleged workplace misconduct, sexual harassment, and financial impropriety, leading to investigations by the NFL and Congress.

Under Snyder

Under Snyder’s ownership, the Commanders have struggled to find success on the field, missing the playoffs in 18 of the last 24 years. Despite having three Super Bowl titles to their name, Washington has never won a Lombardi Trophy with Snyder in charge. The club was also fined $10 million in 2021 following an NFL workplace review and has been criticized for creating a “toxic” workplace culture.

If approved by the NFL, the Commanders’ sale will mark the beginning of a new era for the team, with Harris and his group looking to turn things around both on and off the field.
