According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is in the process of assembling an “All-Star” coaching staff as he prepares for a potential return to the NFL.
Payton has reportedly targeted former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio as a potential defensive coordinator for his staff.
Payton stepped down from his position with the Saints after leading the team for 15 seasons, but he has indicated that he is interested in coaching again, recently stating on Tom Brady’s “Let’s Go!” podcast that he thinks a comeback could happen “sooner than later.”
However, any team that hires Payton, who is still under contract with the Saints, will reportedly have to make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the league and provide the Saints with draft pick compensation.
Fangio has a reputation as a highly respected defensive coach, although his tenure as head coach of the Broncos from 2019-2021 was not successful, as the team failed to achieve a winning record in each of those three seasons.
