It was revealed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles that former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski had a discussion about a potential comeback with the Buccaneers last month.

Coach Bowles stated that “it was more of a conversation than anything else” and that usually when a player has to consider playing again, they probably do not want to play.

Despite the talks, Gronkowski ultimately decided not to return from retirement.

One possibility that was discussed included adding Gronkowski to the practice squad in order to give him time to get back into playing shape. The 33-year-old retired in June after a successful 11-year career with the Buccaneers and New England Patriots, during which he won four Super Bowl championships.

Gronkowski had previously stated that he was done with football, but rumors of a comeback started again this week when he tweeted about being “bored,” which he later clarified was in reference to a business venture.

Gronkowski’s former quarterback, Tom Brady, has led the Buccaneers to a 6-8 record this season, although they currently rank first in the NFC South.
